Describe yourself in a few short sentences:
My name is Sarah and I’m an early childhood educator born and raised in Yarmouth. I spend most of my time with my family and close friends, also enjoying time in nature and reading or drawing. The time that is not spent with them I am usually at a yoga class at SuperNova Power Yoga.
Tell us about your yoga story. When did you first step on a mat, and what brought you there?
I have always been physically active. I have ran, lifted weights and have tried multiple workout videos. As I was getting older I noticed that I was having consistent lower back pain and had read that yoga was good for this so I tried my first class at SuperNova Power Yoga and instantly fell in love with the practice and the yoga community there.
How has practicing yoga improved your life, and positively affected those around you?
At first, it was mainly for the physical benefit that I practiced yoga for, but so much more came with it that was not anticipated. I have become more accepting of myself and others and have found a sense of calm and mindfulness that I have never had. People around me, family and coworkers, tell me I bring a sense of calm to situations I enter and they see the positive change that has happened in me, seeing my happiness.
What’s your favourite pose, and why?
Wheel, because of the opening and different perspective you get from being upside down
What’s your LEAST favourite pose, and why?
Half pigeon, because of the fight or flight response it creates and the concentration it needs to soften into the pose
What advice would you give someone who’s interested in trying yoga, but has yet to take the leap?
Yoga is for everyBODY. You do not need to be flexible, strong or have the perfect body to do it. All you have to do is try. You will reap all the benefits, physically mentally, emotionally and spiritually that this amazing practice can give you. Just take the first step and get on that mat!
